Day 12 - What's the Deal with Keto?

A term that comes up more and these days is Keto. In general, we recommend people start with a balance of:

  • 40% of calories from carbs

  • 30% of calories from fats

  • 30% of calories from protein

However, with Keto, you can shift to something along the lines of:

  • 10% of calories from carbs

  • 60% of calories from fats

  • 30% of calories from protein

Ketosis is a normal metabolic process. When the body does not have enough glucose for energy, it burns stored fats instead; this results in a build-up of acids called ketones within the body. Some people encourage ketosis by following a diet called the ketogenic or low-carb diet. If you're really trying to lose weight, this could be a good option. However, we are all very active people and really limiting the amount of glucose we have available will have an effect on your workouts.

There are a lot of products out there that talk about ""getting into ketosis"" like ""keto tablets"", ""keto tests"", ""keto challenges"", etc. On this challenge we didn't restrict the amount of carbs enough to really get into this state (it could take 50g or less of carbs each day), but it's a discussion that comes up in paleo/primal communities.
