Due to the success of the last Paleo Challenge CFTC will be doing another Paleo Challenge starting this Sunday 06/01 and ending on 06/30. This challenge will let you learn the benefits of Paleo eating while receiving support from other participants throughout the month. The ultimate goal of this challenge is to show you how making healthy eating decisions can enhance your overall performance and health on a daily basis. Below you will find a list of common questions and how to participate.
We hope you will join us!
- What is the Paleo Challenge?
The Paleo Challenge is an individual challenge and a method of holding people accountable on Paleo eating habits for a set period of time. Prizes and Incentives will revealed at a later date.
- What is eating Paleo?
Paleo is short for Paleolithic. The Paleolithic era denotes a large portion of human history. The part to focus on is that during this era humans were primarily hunters/gathers when it came to food:
This Paleo diet tries to mirror what those pre-agricultural revolution folks consumed for example: Meat, Veggies, and Fruits.
- Why would we want to mirror what those folks did?
"Their bones and teeth are healthier than those of agriculturists..."
There are plenty of resources that explain the reasoning of why things that aren't allowed on the Paleo diet are bad for you. In short, if you start following these rules as opposed to regularly breaking them you will see massive performance increases.
- Is the Paleo Challenge for me?
The purpose of the challenge is not to starve ourselves for a month - the purpose is to find the way of eating that leads to improved health and athletic performance. If you haven't tried eating this way, at the very least it provides a blank slate for you to gradually add foods back into your diet and see how your body responds. A lot of us have found that higher levels of carbs are necessary to see strength and endurance gains. However, you'll never be able to see what's limiting you if you don't do some experimentation. So if you've plateaued, if you're not sleeping well, have periodic headaches, if you're wondering how gluten affects you, the challenge is a great place to start. If you've already dialed in how you need to eat to perform well, share some recipes and other tips that have worked for you, even if you don't do the challenge formally.
- Can I participate and how do I participate?
Everyone is welcome to participate.
In order to participate you must submit entries attesting to your obedience or disobedience to each rule by using our Paleo Challenge web form:
- What do I eat?
Here's a link to some suggested foods (http://www.chewfo.com/diets/the-paleo-diet-by-loren-cordain-2002-2010-what-to-eat-and-foods-to-avoid-food-list/#unlimited) - focus on what you can eat (lean meats, all the non-starchy vegetables you want, low sugar fruits like berries, herbs and spices, oils - olive, coconut, avocado). Try some new recipes and some new foods.
The rules/questions below are meant to be as close to black and white as possible. Very strict Paleo has more specific rules. I.E., only lean meat. We will not be that strict for this challenge. As long as the meat has no preservatives, no added sugar, no cheese, etc you won't lose any points. That means things like nitrate free bacon that has no added sugar, like the kind you can find at MOM's market, is good to go. Note: we don't want you eating nothing but bacon.
Follow the suggestions from chewfo. For the challenge you will only be held accountable on the black and white rules below.
- Requirements for the web form
Only one form submission per day will count. The purpose of the form is to record your progress. Each entry submission is stored in a google doc.
Scoring is one long running total for each individual.
Each of the questions below is worth one point. If you answer "No" to any of the required questions it is +1. If you answer "Yes" it is -1. For the optional questions "Yes" is +1" and "No" or no-answer is 0.
If you miss a day's entry submission you will receive a score of -7 for that day. Yes, that is negative seven.
Your name MUST BE EXACTLY THE SAME for each entry. If I put "JTorres" one day and "jtorres" the other one will be lost.

Did you record your weight today in MyFitnessPal?
Your MyFitnessPal pages must be visible to one of the coaches.
Did you post a Paleo recipe on the CFTC FB page with a picture of your results?
The picture must show YOUR results of the meal YOU cooked using the recipe YOU listed. You cannot reuse old photos. The photo you post must have been taken of the meal you cooked that day.
Some of the rules mention MyFitnessPal. This is because we want you to keep a record of what you eat. Whether you follow all the rules, break all the rules, or somewhere in between we want you to write it all down. For the sake of simplicity we have chosen MyFitnessPal for this challenge. From our experience it has the most complete list of food which we can all share and is the easiest to use. Keeping your food journal up to date will not only allow the coaches to hold you accountable on your points for this challenge it will also help you hold yourself accountable for what you eat.
We encourage you to create an account at www.MyFitnessPal.com and begin logging your food.
- End Game
We will setup prizes in the next few days as we get a feel of what folks who are interested in the challenge are OK with. At the end of the challenge we will absolutely have a party at the gym and we will all focus on what changes we've noticed plus what lessons we've learned.
Sign up today as entries will begin to count starting on 06/01 (Any entries prior to 06/01 will NOT count).
Please let us know if you have any questions.
